Arguably, one of the greatest left-handed pitchers of the 1930s, Leroy Matlock was known for keeping hitters off balance by effectively changing speeds with pinpoint control. During his time as an active player (1929 – 1938), the southpaw played for multiple Negro League franchises including the St. Louis Stars, Pittsburgh Crawfords, and the Homestead Grays.
One of the earliest stars of the Negro Leagues, Oscar Charleston was considered “the greatest center fielder and one of the most reliable sluggers in black baseball.” according to findings from the Society for American Baseball Research. In his 26-year career as a player in the Negro Leagues, Charleston played for such notable Negro League clubs as the Indianapolis ABCs, the Pittsburgh Crawfords, and the Chicago American Giants.
